Volunteer Work

The power of a medical education has not been taken lightly by the physicians of this practice. We are all acutely aware of the power that this education represents and have chosen to activate this power not only within the confines of Neponset Valley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery but also within the larger world community. For the past 25 years the doctors within this practice have made it part of their yearly mission to volunteer their time for the care of needy children throughout the developing world. The focus of the care has been primarily children with facial deformities such as those with cleft lip and cleft palate.

Each doctor devotes 2 to 4 weeks per year as a volunteer surgeon with organizations such as Health Volunteers Overseas, Healing the Children, SmileTrain and various other independent programs. Countries visited have included: Colombia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Cambodia, India, Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Samoa, and Saudi Arabia. All activities are self funded and all care is provided at no cost to the families. The volunteer teams often include nurses, surgical residents and medical/dental students.

It is our hope that by seeing this page others will be inspired to follow the call of volunteerism within their own lives and strive to change the world conditions as they exist today. Please do not hesitate to discuss these ideas with the doctors. They will be most happy to share their experiences and to direct others to organizations that will foster the spirit of volunteerism within the world community. We would like to share with you in photographs a small sample of the volunteer experiences of our professional staff.
